Elevated Thyroid - The Implications, Potential Issues, Indicators, Tests And Hormone Levels Of Hyperthyroidism

Frequently referred to as Hyperthyroidism an elevated thyroid can be very harmful to a persons health. The thyroid is primarily responsible for producing 2 hormones, T3 and T4. T3 is the one utilized most by the body and T4 is needed to create T3.

In healthy and balanced people just the right amount of thyroid hormone is created to keep the body running at optimal levels. As a persons health gets worse the thyroid can produce too much (hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism).

The hormones that are created have a direct impact on most of the organs in the body including the heart, under the influence of too much thyroid hormone the heart will beat faster which by itself can be quite serious.

The thyroids main purpose is to regulate part of the metabolism. Or to put it a better way, the thyroid runs the metabolism. An elevated thyroid will increase the metabolisms function, in the majority of cases resulting in weight loss.

Although in some cases the increased metabolism leads to an increase in appetite, if this increase is substantial enough the extra amount of food consumed can be far more the even the increased metabolism can manage and give rise to weight gain.

We've already established that weight gain and weight loss are not reliable symptoms of an elevated thyroid on their own so more symptoms are needed to make a reliable diagnosis.

Before any medical tests for hyperthyroidism are done a combination of symptoms should be found. Other symptoms comprise of palpitations, fatigue, trembling hands, hair loss, breathlessness, muscle weakness, nervousness, and insomnia to name the most common.

Once it's been established that there's a possibility of an elevated thyroid then there are a few simple blood tests that can be undertaken to confirm the diagnosis.

Generally the first test is the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) amounts. The pertuitry grand secretes the TSH hormone. It's purpose is to stimulate the thyroid gland to create more hormone. If the TSH levels are low this usually means the thyroid is producing high levels of the hormone on its own. If the TSH levels are normal then there are more tests that should be taken before ruling hyperthyroidism out.

An iodine thyroid scan is going to show if the underlying cause is a single nodule or an entire gland.

The thyroid levels themselves (T3 and T4) can be tested, in most cases all of the thyroid levels will be high with the exception of TSH which is likely to be reduced.
