When I was a little girl I thought that only aged people wore dentures. After all, my grandmother had upper dentures, and all of grandpa's teeth were duplicate. I never thought that I would be wearing dentures while I was still a young girl.

I was thirty three years old when I had to have the remainder of my teeth removed, all nine of them. My teeth have never been healthy and they were eventually removed one at a time. Except for the four front upper teeth which went at the same time and the new teeth were promptly set in their position and bonded to the teeth next to them. But, ultimately they all had to go.

When the last nine teeth were extracted I had the dentures set immediately. I did not want to be without teeth.

Somehow I believed it would be difficult to get used to having teeth in my mouth because of being without them for some time. Eventually, I found this to be true. By having the dentures placed right away upon extraction, I was never without teeth so the dentures are as if my natural teeth.

I have to admit that having the dentures placed immediately on extraction was difficult but only in that I could not clean them myself for at least three weeks. I had to visit the dentist's office where he took out the denture, cleaned it and returned it, throughout the time that the gums were recovering.

After three weeks I was able to do this myself. In the beginning the task was an odd one. Removing the dentures and scrubbing them and replacing them. But it did have its one light moment.

At that time my youngest child was about four years old. He entered the bathroom one day just as I was cleaning my denture. He stood there with his eyes and mouth wide open, then turned around and ran outside of the house as fast as he could. He ran down the block to my girlfriend's house shouting as loud as he could "Aunt Mary, Aunt Mary, guess what my mommy can do?" When he stated her what I could do she walked him back home and we both explained dentures to him. That I was not just taking out my natural teeth. We still laugh about that, so many years after.

I still believe that the very best way to place your denture is right after extraction (sometimes called same day dentures today) because you are never without teeth. You never ever have to go through that period of getting used to having teeth, as you might need to do if you go without dentures while your gums are healing. What delights me most is that when I do need to go without my dentures (surgery, etc.) my jaw in fact hurts because it has really not been closed without teeth. That tight close is always very painful.

I have realized that dentures are not just for old people since they are meant for youngsters as well. As I stated, at age thirty three I had my upper dentures. Since then I figured out that there are children that always have to have dentures due to accidents or disease.
